   Ask for your export

   ChatGPT and Claude both have an official export button. In ChatGPT: Settings → Data controls → Export data. In Claude: Settings → Privacy → Export data. A zip file arrives by email, usually within minutes but sometimes after a few days (ChatGPT’s download link expires after 24 hours).

   Create a project, upload the pack, paste the starter prompt that comes inside. Your new assistant reads your history, summarizes where you left off, and keeps going.

Is this allowed?

Yes. Move My Chat only reads the official data export that ChatGPT and Claude offer in their own settings. It never logs in to your account, never scrapes, and never touches the provider’s servers.

Why can’t it just connect to my account?

No consumer AI subscription offers an API for chat history, so a tool promising a one-click account connection would have to scrape your logged-in session. That breaks every provider’s terms, and it breaks technically every few weeks. The export file is the honest, durable route.

What exactly do I get?

A zip with one folder per project, plus one for chats that were not in a project. Each folder holds your conversations as readable transcripts (long histories merged into a few dated files with an index, so they fit your new assistant’s upload limits), plus a START HERE guide for your destination and a starter prompt to paste in.

Can I get a refund?

What does not move?

Images, voice messages and uploaded files: the official exports do not include them, so transcripts mark where they were. ChatGPT also leaves project names and instructions out of its export, so those folders are named after their latest chat. Custom GPTs and settings stay behind.

Which assistants work today?

Reads exports from ChatGPT and Claude. Builds packs with tailored import instructions for ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok. Reading Gemini and Grok exports is on the roadmap.

Does my new assistant really pick up where the old one left off?

It reads your imported history as project knowledge, so it knows what you were working on, what you decided, and how you like to work. It won’t be a perfect clone of the old thread, but it beats starting from a blank chat and re-explaining everything.

How big an export can it handle?

The whole conversion runs in your browser’s memory, so it depends on your machine. Exports in the hundreds of megabytes are generally fine, and very long single conversations are split into parts automatically so your new assistant can accept them.
